A Silversea ship reconfigured for the polar regions

Call her the new queen of the polar regions. Silversea Cruises' 23-year-old Silver Cloud has just emerged from a massive drydock makeover designed to turn her into the sleekest polar exploration vessel at sea.

PUERTO MADRYN, Argentina — Thinking of a cruise to Antarctica or the Arctic? Our latest cruise ship tour, in the carousel above, offers a deck-by-deck look at the latest ship dedicated to the Polar Regions, Silversea’s luxury line Silver Cloud.

Originally unveiled in 1994, the fully crewed vessel has just emerged from a massive makeover designed to make her the sleekest polar expedition vessel at sea.

As seen in the tour, the transformation included the addition of 16 motorized Zodiac rafts to disembark passengers in remote locations as well as 10 kayaks for exploration.

Silver Cloud has also been equipped with new sonars that will help with underwater ice detection and new windows resistant to polar temperatures. The ship’s steel hull has also been reinforced and it has received a new ice-class bulbous bow that will allow navigation in icy polar waters.

In the passenger areas, work included a major overhaul of its onboard accommodations, which the line says are now the most important in expedition cruising – the cruising niche of exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations. in small vessels that carry motorized boats. landing rafts. The ship will also have the highest space-to-passenger and crew-to-passenger ratios in expedition cruising.

Silver Cloud’s spa has also been revamped and the ship now has a new photo studio where passengers can edit and print images.

As part of the makeover, Silver Cloud’s capacity was reduced from 290 to 254 passengers. But it will only sail with 200 passengers when operating in the polar regions.
